Name:Sir Winston Alexander Norwich
Age: 65 (1520)
Rank: Captain
Nationality:English
Appearance: Plump old man standing 6'2, with a bald head a bushy grey mustache and eyebrows. Winston's stern traces, descended from his german blood, and his disciplined posture tend to lead folk to believe him as a harsh, stone cold men being the exact opposite.
Personal History:
Only son of Sir Alexander Norwich, a British Ambassador in the Holy Roman Empire, and Lady Greta Von Augsburg. There he was raised until his 5th birthday, when his father decided that the young Winston should be tutored by an old friend back in England, the Earl of Nottingham.
The Earl was a great man and raised Winston as one of his own, but all that tutoring was meant for a man of war, and the German-British boy never had interests for those things, he wanted to be just like his father… But opportunity never came. At fifteen he, although reluctant, joined the Corps hoping that at least he’d get the chance to harness a dragon… and it never happened, most dragons spurned him and hardly would even let him mount them as a crew member.
When his father died, the Ambassador position was left open and his fluent German (and his heritage) made him perfectly suitable for the job. And as his father’s body returns home to be buried, he went to Vienna with a royal permit to assume office.
Winston had always been a men fond eating, so everything that was denied him in the Corps training he supplemented at Court, and in less than a month he had already developed some pounds. His kind and easygoing manner was well accepted by the Habsburgs and he became great friends with the Imperial heir… Until that, both fateful and rewarding, August night.
He had just completed fifteen years at office, and two married with a beautiful german noble girl Emma Strauss (she was 5 months pregnant of their second son, being the first named Winston Alexander II… Yes, he was unoriginal and self-centered).
The Prince had called a small… party in his chambers, with some… girl friends… to commemorate the anniversaries with his brother of a different mother. After some drinks and… fruitful dialogs with the girls… they decided to settle for some gambling matches, a fun game between comrades.
They played for hours, betting everything they had at hand… Winston lost every match, and thus lost two horses, a couple heads of cattle and half his father’s vintage wines collection. The Prince, heavily influenced by his cups decided to make a final gamble to end the night.
“Winston, my friend… You really seem to be bad on your luck tonight.” The prince said, with a heavy tone of irony. “Let’s get this stakes higher, you win and I give you that.” He pointed to a dragon egg upon the cupboard.
“I’ll take it…” Winston’s eyes glowed like a child’s.
“But if you lose… ” The Habsburg made a pause. “I get to spend a night with Emma…” He had always had eyes for her, Winston knew.
“I said it… I’ll take it.” He could not hesitate, that egg was valuable, and he had faith that God would be on his side this time.
None if them had recollection of those last moments; both had passed out as they noticed that the impossible had happened. Winston woke next morning in the Prince’s chambers half naked as he had been last night, the egg was laid by his side with a note that read… “It’s yours. I’m a man of honor, but father won’t like it.” And not a minute after he had finished putting his clothes back on, he was summoned to meet the Kaiser.
The Great Hall was silent, the Prince stood (head hanging low) by his fathers throne. The Emperor himself was red in anger, but as he spoke managed to maintain his decorum.
“Winston Alexander, that object that you hold on your hands is of my property and none other.” Apparently, the Prince had told him the whole story. “My fool of a son had the indecency of betting something that was not even his, he shall be punished accordingly.”
Winston swallowed dry, he knew death to be certain… They’d probably chop his hands off than hand him on a public plaza for stealing Crown property.
"
“But, I am a Holy man… The holiest beneath only the Pope and our Lord Jesus Christ. If God spoke through these dies who am I to confront his will? You can keep the egg, but you and your family will be sent back to England never to step again of Habsburg lands. In this, I wish also to generate conflict with our dear English friends...”
He could breathe now.
“If this egg ever comes to hatch, the creature inside it shall never be used against the Habsburgs or our allies and friends… Swear it, Winston, on God, our Lord Jesus, the Holy Mother Church and his Eminency the Pope.”
Winston didn’t even care which god he was talking about, he just wanted to live (and maybe keep the dragon)… He fell to his knees and promised.
“Out of my sight…”
That same day he was deported… The egg hatched a ship, on their way back to London. Winston was tense but managed to harness the beast, just as he had seen many doing before in the Corps, but unlike the british dragons from the Air Force, this one seemed to be much more fond of him. Although the british monarch did not see the gaining of a new Midweighted dragon as a bad thing, he had become furious with the stain on their relations with the Emperor.
But after decades fighting in the Air Force, he managed to regain his fame an honor, and even to be knighted. Now, mounting Legatus, he is one of the most admired and trusted veteran of the Corps.
Relations:
Emma Strauss- She lives on a small but luxurious manor owned by the Norwichs on the Countryside (near the Covert where Winston lives), with some acres of land where they raise sheep and extract wood and minerals. They live in a perfect marriage, although the husband is often away on duty.
Winston Alexander II - The son was destined by birth to be the favorite son. He was indeed, until he grew much on the likeness of his father, and as they say "It's much harder to love your own image" or something like that. His father groomed him to follow his footsteps and become a diplomat, now he lives in Scotland with his daughter and wife as an English ambassador at Stuart's court.
Mary Ravensdale - Winston chose the betrothal himself, Mary was the daughter of a prominent wool merchant, thus cementing a prosperous trade agreement. She turned out to be a kind and lovable child, winning over both father and son. Emma is jealous of her precious little boy, and acts acidly towards the poor girl.
Alice Norwich- Of all, Winston's favorite. The sweetest of child's, he calls her "Großvater's little queen".
Winston Alexander III- The youngest, he serves as his grandfather's squire. Winston tutors him to follow the family's footsteps, but also to be prepared to join the Corps. He also demands the child to call him "Herr Winston", just to teach some discipline.
Acton Norwich- Everyone's favorite uncle, Acton is a wild and fun figure. He was sent to the navy by his former tutor, the Earl of Warwick.
Legatus- At first, their relation was quite cold, although Legatus had always tried to warm up to him. Winston regarded his dragon as much as a blessing as curse, that egg had caused him to lose not only great friends but also the only place he had ever called home, for Winston was an Englishman through and through, but "Germany" had been his, and everyone he'd ever loved, birthplace. It all changed one night in the Covert, Legatus was only a few months old and Winston was coming back from supper... Somehow, a feral acid spitter had escaped the breeding grounds and was about to reap Winston's life, when Legatus rushed from the middle of the night and wrestled the much bigger feral to the ground. Winston thought it was all lost when he heard a loud snap, and both dragons stumbled to the ground. The sharpspitter was dead, his head had been ripped off, and Legatus badly wounded by acid. That was the turning point, he cared for him and hardly ate until the dragon was fully healed, for that night he noticed that he feared had feared for Legatus as he might have feared for Winston II and Acton.
His Crew- During his free time, he likes to feast and have fun with them, treats them like part of the family. But when on duty, he is focused and authoritative and expects nothing more from them than discipline and perfection.
Peasantry- Hates them.
