Name: Nathaniel Derrick
Age: 31, born July 1553
Rank: Captain
Nationality: English
Appearance:
Nathaniel creates a striking figure as he stands with his fists at his hips, staring into the distant horizon astride his dragon. Even on the ground, the man stands at a reasonable 6' flat and bears the toned structure of someone who hasn't seen a lazy day since they came off of the tit. He has dark brown hair, and while on land he may try to look presentable for important meetings, his standard appearance is the windswept visage of a man who gave up battling the wind long ago.
Personal History:
Nathaniel Derrick has served with the Royal Air Corps for twenty-two years, but his time spent around the great beasts went as far back as the womb. Son of the prestigious David 'Deadend' Derrick, an ensign turned captain whose record of service went as far back as the dirt dinosaurs slept on. Rumor had it that because the great captain was never far from his dragon, and his wife was serving as his chief lieutenant, little Nathaniel was conceived on the back of a dragon, and born nine months later to the rhythm of the wing-beats. His official service to the Corps began when he was only nine, as a simple runner who worked his way up through the ranks piece by piece, ultimately serving as a lieutenant on the back of a Yellow Reaper when his promotion to captain came through. Rewarded for the dutiful service at the age of twenty-four, and the recognition from his superiors of the charisma he had with the dragons, they assigned him as the replacement captain of his current dragon to coincide with his former captain's, and father's, retirement. In the following seven years, he's trained both crew and dragon to work in synchronicity as if they were one and the same, for in combat, they would need to be. Any disrespect directed towards captain, crew, or creature is taken as a direct affront to his personal honor.
Reputation:
While Nathaniel is respected both for his own service in the Corps and his father's, some of the others in the Corps find his attitude towards his dragon unusual. Despite the view by many as them being tools or servants, he has always respected the vast intelligence he believes the creatures hold the capacity for, and treats his Reaper as though it were his own brother. Word of his removal of an ensign for referring to the creature as an ugly brute spread quickly through the Corps, even though no protest was ever made, and no further action taken. Despite the oddity of the relationship, the ability of captain and crew is respected. He maintains a friendly disposition to the other captains, and welcomes his dragon socializing with any others.
