We have to be British, correct? Had a fun conquistador idea, as I do love villainous types. Otherwise if Brtish is mandatory, I decided on a Chequered Nettle/Parnassian cross.

I do need you to be British in nationality. Fun Fact: Hernan Cortes was eaten by a dragon and the Incan Empire survived even into the Napoleonic era in this universe

Yeah I've been reading the wiki.
Can I have a Copacati if I do the backstory of how he came to get it justice?

The Wiki includes a link to the dragon breeds as well. There should be a Temeraire specific Wiki on the author's website but it's unfortunately down at the moment. I keep checking! To be honest, the setting is not all that different from Elizabethan England, so research that and we should all be ok. I should do that too actually. Barnaby chose the Elizabethan setting in part to avoid stepping too close to the books, which are set during the Napoleonic Wars, but the aim is to base the world on what the books tell us about aviator customs and lifestyles, and dragon behaviour. Reading the books would certainly give an advantage in that respect but I did write up a few notes to help you guys out.

Presumably we'll need Beth, Zack and April to make their characters first though, since they're captains.

I personally thought the Parnassian/Chequered Nettle cross was a good idea.

The British ones are so boring though in comparison (also much harder to explain given my corsair turned privateer with a royal pardon character concept) and the exotic ones are fun to come up with backstories to explain. Trying to put that history masters to some use. It says in the rules we could request a non-British one, so was just trying to have some fun with that. I'll be dull if I must, but hell even the books seem to acknowledge this by giving the main character an exotic.

Well, I cannot speak for Ms Novik, of course, but I would imagine she didn't make Temeraire an exotic dragon just for drama. I know that there's a strong literary tradition of heroes being someone outside the norm, the outsider/different person as hero, so in a way Novik can't be blamed for that but she could have easily made Temeraire's special ability a British one if she'd wanted. So I'm guessing she wanted the Chinese connection for plot reasons. Additionally, Temeraire's captain, Laurence, is an outsider to the Corps as well so I guess it made sense for them both to be, because they are better able to critique the Corps' attitude towards dragons than someone raised in the system.
The privateer idea sounds fun though. I'm sure it works with a British breed though. The main issue here is ensuring that the dragons are distributed fairly. The problem with the Kazilik was that it was likely the most valuable dragon in the world, possibly excepting the Celestials. The Copacatis are presumably not quite so high powered but it would be pretty special as a non-native breed. To be honest, it would stick out like a sore thumb in Britain! Especially considering the feathers, which no British dragon has.
